Alfred Nzo district
At just7 952km˛, the north eastern Alfred Nzo district is the smallest district in the Eastern Cape. Its boundaries stretch from the Lesotho border in the north to KwaZulu-Natal in the east. It is bordered by OR Tambo district in the south and Ukhahlamba district in the west. Alfred Nzo has a relatively small population of approximately 544 000 people and a relatively high density of 69 people per square metre. The first language is Xhosa, but the use of Sesotho and Zulu is significant in some areas. Boundaries and therefore statistics may change once a final decision is taken on border redemarcations affecting Matatiele.
The seat of Alfred Nzo is Mount Ayliff . Key towns are:
· Mount Ayliff
· Matatiele
· Mount Frere
Although it is the smallest district in the Eastern Cape – just 7 952 km˛ - Alfred Nzo district is steeped in history and has a growing international reputation as an idyllic trout fishing spot.
It is named after ANC stalwart Alfred Nzo who was the organisation’s longest serving secretary-general from 1969 to 1991. He was also the first Foreign Affairs Minister of a non-racial and democratic South Africa.
The smallest of the six districts, much of the area exceeds 1 000 meters above sea level. Rainfall is high and winters can be bitterly cold. It is one of the few areas in the Eastern Cape that experiences snow in winter.
Agriculture is the principal economic activity and provides 12% of formal employment. High rainfalls and the temperature ranges between summer and winter make the area suitable for forestry and there are extensive plantations in Umzimkhulu and Maluti.

Breedekloof
There is more to the Breedekloof than its 22 wineries that produce some of the country’s finest wines - and of course fine wines accompany fine dining. Restaurants, bistros and coffee shops offer a unique culinary experience of traditional country and fine international cuisine.
A scenic one-hour drive from the Mother City of Cape Town, the splendid environment offers a range of outdoor activities including some of the best trout fishing in the country along the Molenaars, Elandsjacht and Smalblaar rivers.
Scenic cycle routes and mountain bike trails abound and the craggy mountain ranges, fynbos and endemic bird life attract hikers from near and far. Horse-riding through vineyards is a treat for enthusiasts of all ages and for those who prefer motorised transport, there is quad biking through the vineyards or challenging 4x4 excursions.
Just a short drive from the city, Breedekloof offers country living at its best and is therefore a prime holiday, conference and wedding destination.
French Huguenot settler Pieter du Toit discovered the Breedekloof area in 1716. Part of the land within the Breedekloof is known as Goudini, derived from the indigenous Khoi-San word meaning ‘fragrant honey’, hence the name of the popular holiday resort in the area.
The blend of Huguenot wine-making heritage and the Khoi-San tribe´s harmony with nature, contributed to the perfect cultural blend of fine wine, outdoor living and eco-adventure in this harmonious natural environment.

Bitterfontein, Rietpoort, Nuwerus & Kliprand
Bitterfontein:
In the heart of the Hardeveld lies Bitterfontein. The surrounding area is one of the best spots for flower viewing during the spring. The town took its name after the very saline fountain, the "Bitterfontein" which still exists. Bitterfontein is well-known for its delicious mutton and sheep farming is the main agriculture activity of the area. Also mined here is the rare "Bitterfontein Green", a green granite found nowhere else in the world. Visit the "Boerewinkel" General Dealer for assorted sweets in a papercone or for fresh butter. You can also ask the locals to tell you the story about why Bitterfontein got the hotel and Nuwerus the church?.
Rietpoort:
The small missionary village of Rietpoort is a mere 28km drive away from Bitterfontein, off the N7. Tucked away between impressive granite formations that changes colour with the passing of the sun overhead, Rietpoort's friendly inhabitants will welcome you to their part of Namaqualand. In Rietpoort you can experience an adventurous donkey cart ride as well as traditional cuisine presented as a picnic, or the local choir will entertain you with traditional songs. Beautiful wild flowers colour the area during springtime, so for a Namaqualand experience with a difference, do include Rietpoort in your tour plans.

The quaint country village of Bonnievale lies snuggled between the Langeberg mountains and the mighty Breede River, in one of the prettiest locations of the Western Cape.
The lush valley is dotted with fruit farms and wine estates and there is much to see and do both in the town and in the beautiful natural surroundings. No city life here, just home-grown hospitality and nature at its best.

Along the way, encounter indigenous trees, the Breede River Redfin carp that is hovering on extinction, old leopard traps, rock formations, historic stonewall and black eagles nest. Refresh yourself at the waterfall or plunge into one of the crisp mountain pools.
There is much to see and do in the area: wine tasting, hiking, 4x4 trails, golfing, fishing, canoeing, a cruise on The Breede River Goose, bird-watching and more, but most of all it is a place for relaxing, breathing in fresh air and enjoying the hospitality of Bonnievale and its warm and friendly folk!

Drakensberg
The Drakensberg mountains of South Africa or uKhahlamba (the Barrier of Spears) is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and world heritage site. The largest proportion of the Drakensberg area falls in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The Zulu people named it 'Ukhahlamba' and the Dutch Voortrekkers 'The Dragon Mountain'. The Drakensberg Mountains, with their awe-inspiring basalt cliffs, snowcapped in winter, tower over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, form a massive barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. The only road access to the Drakensberg is via Sani Pass, which at the top, boasts the highest pub on Africa, 3 000 metres above sea level.
Combining sheer natural beauty with a wealth of biological diversity, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region known the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park has been preserved and venerated for eons since the San people or bushmen roamed these slopes. Tens of thousands of paintings depicting their daily life can be found on the rock faces, and in December 2000, the park received international recognition and was declared KwaZulu-Natal's second World Heritage Site.

De Doorns
Not only is the Hex River Valley known as the “Biggest producer of table grapes in South Africa”. It also hosts the Matroosberg (highest Mountain peak in the Western Cape) and Hexkoel, the biggest pre-cooler in the Southern Hemisphere. De Doorns Wine Cellar has the longest harvest season in the world! Also unique to the Hex River Valley, is the access to nearby Big 5 Game Reserves, AQUILA and FAIRY GLEN. The Exe River Valley, as it was originally called (due to ox wagon trails crisscrossing the river), was originally home to Bushmen and the wild animals they hunted. It’s hard to believe that elephants and buffalo once roamed the now cultivated valley.
By the end of the 18th century six farms had been granted in the valley, one of them, Buffelskraal, played a part in the renaming of the area to Hex River Valley.

DORINGBAAI: This picturesque little town of Doringbaai is situated about 8 km from Strand-fontein. The crayfish factory and jetty create a picture which remains in one's memory, and the attractive lighthouse serves as a beacon for both fishermen and tourists. Before the town was established, the bay was used as an anchorage on the sea trading route. Provisions off-loaded from the boats were transported to Vanrhynsdorp by camels.

It is very close to the mouth of the Olifants River. It is an ideal place for an overnight stay for the tourist seeking a peaceful night close to the sea.
