Riebeek - Kasteel & Riebeek-Wes
RIEBEEK-KASTEEL: This town is situated on the R311 about 75km NNE of Cape Town. Situated on the slopes of the Kasteelberg (Castle Mountain), a 946m high solitary rock of Table Mountain sandstone, sentinal amidst the rolling wheatfields and vineyards of the Swartland, the tranquil village of Riebeek-Kasteel is covered in the softest hues of pink and white during spring when the peach orchards are in bloom. Riebeek-Kasteel was named after Jan van Riebeeck and the Kasteelberg. The name Riebeek-Kasteel appears for the first time in the journal of the surgeon, Pieter van Meerhof, in 1661 while he was on a discovery expedition.
RIEBEEK-WES: Riebeek-Wes is situated 4km from Riebeek-Kasteel on the R311 in the direction of Moorreesburg and is closely linked with Riebeek-Kasteel. Riebeek-Wes, like Riebeek-Kasteel used to be a district of the Swartland congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church at Malmesbury, but later became independent. Riebeek-Wes is noted for the fact that two of South Africa's major political figures were born here. General Smuts was born on the farm Bovenplaas in the 1870 and Dr DF Malan on the farm Allesverloren.

Redelinghuys
Approximately 200km in a North Westerly direction from Cape Town, lies the almost-forgotten village of Redelinghuys, in the heart of the potato farming community. Redelinghuys has established itself as the potato capitol of the SANDVELD REGION, as they produce the best of the best. The village's beauty lies in the surrounding rocky hillside, with its almost magical forms and shapes and the well-known VERLORENVLEI. VERLORENVLEI (RAMSAR protected) is one of the largest wetlands on the West Coast and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Elands Bay. It is renowned for its abundant birdlife, rarity of unique fynbos species and untouched nature. During the flower season (July - Sep) the vicinity is covered with a colourful patchwork of flowers, including the popular Sandveld Lily aka Red Lily and attracts many hikers and nature lovers. Visitors can experience a face-to-face encounter with rock paintings and the resettling of indigenous wild life, e.g. Oribi, Springbuck, Gemsbuck, Eland, etc.

Saron
In 1848 Johannes Heinrich Kulpmann of Rhenish Mission Society bought this farm Leeuwenklip, in order to establish a mission station to serve the freed slaves and indigenous inhabitants in the area. The mission station was named Saron, which is of biblical origin meaning “flats” or “plain”.
In 1852 the Rhenish Mission Church took control of the mission station and a church was erected. The existing farm complex and farm buildings were incorporated into the mission complex. The farm house became the “pastorie”, a church was built adjacent the “pastorie” and the wine cellar was used a school until a new building was built in 1877.
Besides access to agricultural and pastoral land, the mission provided the inhabitants with education, health services and an opportunity to develop skills in craft production and as artisans. Some of these skills exist within the community today.
The population of Saron steadily increased into the 20th century and Saron was officially proclaimed a town on the 19th of December 1929. In 1945 the Dutch Reformed Church took control of Mission. In 1950 the Church was forced to give up control of Saron.
The town of Saron was administered by a succession of secular authorities until Saron recently gained municipal status and the Saron Local Authority was established.

South Coast
Margate, Port Shepstone, Scottburgh, Port Edward, sardines, golf, whales, dolphins, the Oribi Gorge, hibiscus flowers and golden beaches are some of the terms which people associate with this magnificent South Coast region of South Africa and the Zulu Kingdom.
Sub-tropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather make KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast a popular year-round holiday resort for both local and international visitors. Accommodation varies from up-market hotels to camping facilities, and everything in between.
Swim in the surf or just laze on the South Coast beaches, working on your suntan. Three beaches, namely Ramsgate, Marina Beach and Lucien, have International 'Blue Flag' status.
For the golfer, the South Coast is close to golfing paradise. Named by many 'The Golf Coast', there are nine excellent 18- hole golf courses, two of which are rated amongst the top 12 in the country.
If you want to commune with nature, visit the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which conserves plants found nowhere else in the world, or go birding - 400 bird species have been counted along this coastline.
Scuba diving is a popular sport on the South Coast with excellent deep-sea diving areas at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. Try surfing at the internationally acclaimed surf spots or go abseiling in the Oribi Gorge. Breathtaking is the way you would describe both the scenery and your feelings as you plunge over the edge and swing high over the deep gorge.
Every winter, there is the phenomenon of the sardine run - millions of sardines migrate up the coast, accompanied by by dolphins and other large fish and thousands of sea birds which feed on them, and people come from far and wide to scoop up buckets of this natural harvest.

Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is without doubt one of the prettiest little towns in the whole of South Africa. Situated at the head of the Eerste (First) River Valley, it was one of the first valleys to be settled in. The area is full of charming scenes and rich in history. The towns, villages and farmlands contain finely preserved examples of one of the most serene forms of domestic architecture found any where in the world - the Cape-Dutch style.
With a rustle of excitement fluttering through the old oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch. Tourism booming in South Africa and the 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament on the way, Stellenbosch is reaffirming itself as the premier wineland destination in South Africa. If the forefathers who established the town on the banks of the Eerste River in 1679 had a crystal ball, they would have had started dancing on their ox wagons.
Today’s Stellenbosch still pays homage to culture and heritage, as the town has done since its humble Dutch origins. Each new generation of architects, buildings and town planners used the inspiration of their predecessors to ensure that the aesthetic values of Stellenbosch remained intact. The result is that to this day, the influence of many architectural styles over the last three centuries are to be seen in the meticulously restored buildings throughout the town.
From the whitewashed Anglican church and museums surrounding the emerald green Braak - Stellenbosch’s historical centre - to the myriad Cape Dutch farmhouses and the 19th century university buildings, the town exudes history and good taste.
This visual effect of Stellenbosch is, of course, compounded by the fact that the town is surrounded by spectacular mountains and some of the world’s most famous vineyards adding to the town and region’s attractiveness to the local and international tourist.
Another major characteristic for Stellenbosch being such a popular destination is its vibrancy. It may be pretty and idyllic, but Stellenbosch remains a bustling town filled with busy people pursuing myriad professions, as well as students studying at the world-renowned Stellenbosch University. “Doll’s House” tourism where visitors look from the outside in is not to be found in Stellenbosch.
Visitors are literally sucked into the community, welcomed and encouraged to become part of the vibrant town life for the duration of their stay.

Uthungulu
Zululand history, King Shaka, Ulundi, Eshowe and Richards Bay are some of the terms associated with thie world-renowned region of KwaZulu-Natal's Zululand.
The sheer majesty of Zululand will take your breath away. Under the hot African sun, the cobalt blue Indian Ocean, mangrove swamps and limpid lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests which shimmer in the distance before they reach the Drakensberg Mountains.
While you are in Zululand, enjoy the welcoming wide smiles extended to you by the local people. Enjoy the comfortable accommodation in major towns, game lodges, to seashore cottages, Zulu homes or floating lake chalets.
Zululand teems with private and provincial game reserves which offer game-watching facilities as well as hiking and nature trails.
But it is probably 'the Zulu experience' which will linger in your mind long after you have left Zululand. Take an ox wagon to Zulu villages of bee-hive huts and experience traditional Zulu hospitality, or a rural wedding ceremony, and if you wish, visit a sangoma (traditional healer). You cannot leave without a visit to Ulundi, the site of the final battle fought in the Anglo-Zulu war. Nearby, Zulu kings lie buried in the Emakhosini Valley. In total contrast are the township tours showcasing modern Zulu life including taverns, shebeens and traditional medicine shops.
Further inland lie tea plantations, cattle ranches and pretty, historical towns such as Vryheid and Paulpietersburg where you can relax in the therapeutic sulphur springs.
Zululand, the heart and pulse of the Zulu Kingdom

Wellington
Wellington was originally a settlement of French Huguenot refugees started in 1688, and the region was known as Limiet Vallei (‘Limit Valley’). It was later changed to Wagenmakers Vallei due to a wagon building industry which developed there when the Kimberley diamond fields were discovered in 1869.
Wellington lies in the Berg River valley about 13 km north of Paarl. Sir George Napier, Governor of the Cape, renamed the settlement in 1840 in honour of the Duke of Wellington who was the victor at the Battle of Waterloo. Wellington experienced rapid growth and prospered after the opening of Bains Kloof Pass to the Tulbagh valley en route to the north in 1853. This growth was further enhanced by the opening of the railway line in 1863.
Rev. Andrew Murray, the Dutch Reformed minister from 1871 to 1906 opened the Huguenot Seminary in 1874. The oldest teachers training college in South Africa was opened in 1896 and the Huguenot Seminary became a university college in 1916. This university closed its doors in 1950 but the Dutch Reformed Church continued to train missionaries and social workers there.
The Wellington region is famous for its fruit, particularly apricots and for its wine farming. In early summer one can see wooden frames containing apricot halves throughout the region. Wellington is the headquarters of the dried fruit industry in South Africa.
Many splendid examples of Cape Dutch architecture can be found in the Wellington area. One fine example, now a national monument is Twistniet (‘don’t quarrel’) and was built in 1811. Other fine examples can be found on the surrounding farms.
The British built a number of blockhouses and the southernmost fort built during the Anglo-Boer War can be found on the banks of the Berg River on the farm Versailles north of the town. The blockhouse has been proclaimed as a national monument.

Xaus Lodge
The complex comprises a central lodge building and 12 individual chalets, each with its own deck, accommodating 24 guests.
The central lodge overlooks a vast salt pan and waterhole fed with fresh water. It comprises a welcoming reception area with its unique wall-hanging made by the ladies of Vezokhule, a sewing co-operative in Upington. The cosy lounge has a fireplace and a library of selected books for paging through before dinner. Our dining area overlooks the pan, with furniture hand-made in Upington and images burnt by Bushmen artists.
At the art and craft shop, you can purchase locally made Bushman crafts as well as crafts made in the wider Kalahari. Visit the large observation deck from which we gaze in wonder at the night sky, and by day the swimming pool provides cool relief from the desert heat. Wood is a precious commodity in the Kalahari, so the inviting fire in the boma is made in the traditional method with three or four crossed sticks around which everyone huddles companionably.
In the chalets we provide purified drinking water from the desert which you will find in a flask in your bathroom. Winter sheets and gas heaters provide comfort for the cold nights, and ceiling fans bring relief in the hot month

Zululand - Uthungulu
Zululand is a place of unspoilt beauty characterised by a pristine coastline, abundant forests, rolling green hills and zigzagging rivers. It is a world of rich natural diversity and enormous social contrasts - a place where modern lifestyles thrive adjacent to a culture steeped in traditions.
Its tranquillity belies its history, which is packed with conflict - clan against clan as well as kingdom against kingdom. This is where Victorian Britain's imperial ambitions and military might were shaken by the gallantry of 'a remarkable people' armed only with shields and spears.
The infrastructure is modern and efficient and yet just off the highway is another world, living as if from another time. Deep in Zululand's wide valleys with grasslands fringed by forest, it is still possible to get a sense of how things were before.
Its unhurried pace and mild sub-tropical climate makes it an ideal and affordable year-round holiday destination.
Zululand is waiting to be discovered . . .
